Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Hypnotherapy & other services

Will I lose control?
No. You will be in complete control throughout the hypnotherapy session. There will be no clucking like a chicken, no staring into my eyes, no waving objects, no dancing like a monkey and certainly no revealing of any secrets. In fact, I don’t even ask you to speak when you are in the relaxed state of hypnosis.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is not the same as stage hypnosis; you are in full control and your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you. It’s like day dreaming, so even if the therapist left the room and never returned you would come around by yourself within a few minutes.

Are there any dangers?
No. You will be in a safe and secure environment, simply experiencing a wonderful sense of relaxation.
Does it work for everyone?
The level of trance is not dependent on the success of the therapy. Therefore, most people can go into at least a light trance, similar to when day dreaming or watching TV and not realising that someone is trying to talk to you.

This level is sufficient for most hypnotherapeutic goals and change. Therefore, most people can benefit from hypnotherapy to some degree, but the extent of the results varies from person to person.

Will I remember everything?
The answer to this question is dependent on the individual. Everyone has their own unique experience. Some will remember everything that is said during hypnosis while others find their mind drifts off almost as though they are sleeping (this will be further explained in the initial consultation).

It is very common to remember some, but not all, of what is said during hypnosis, which actually reflects the way the memory normally works. For example, when listening to a speech you don’t remember all that was said, but you can usually recall most of it. The same applies for hypnosis.

Don’t forget, we have two parts to our mind, the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind hears all that you remember, while the subconscious mind hears all that is important and necessary to you. Therefore, just because you are not aware or conscious of what is said during hypnosis, it doesn’t mean that the session hasn’t worked.

Will I have to talk about the past?
One of the many benefits of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is that it doesn’t involve the analysis of memories or the past. We will not evaluate, or re-live painful experiences or emotions. Should you wish to tell me about problems or the past, we will acknowledge that these events happened and help you get from where you are now to where you want to be.
Is this therapy suitable for children and teenagers?
Yes. I have worked with children as young as 9 years old for conditions and symptoms varying from specific phobias and fears, sleeping difficulties, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, low mood, autism and sound sensitivity, attentional focus and hyperactivity, exam stress and many more. I also have an up to date extended DBS check.

During the initial consultation, I will assess whether my approach is likely to be of benefit to your child, and you will be able to stay in the sessions if that is what you and your child wish. Sessions cater for the age and maturity of the child and incorporate elements of play and interaction where necessary to keep them interested and engaged in the session.

I am a mother myself with extensive experience of working and engaging with children of all ages. I have worked in voluntary roles within Girl Guiding and had the invaluable experience of living and working with children in care, who have often experienced significant trauma and made problematic life choices.

I have a bubbly personality, I’m easy to talk to and my ability to relate to children on their level has often been commented upon. It is extremely important to build the therapeutic alliance where a younger client feels secure, relaxed and excited to return the following week.

How many sessions will I need?
This varies from client to client and according to the issues being addressed. Change can happen quickly, but as a rough guide in addition to the initial consultation, the average number of sessions can be:

    • Depression and anxiety disorders 6 to 12 sessions.
    • Specific phobias usually 4 sessions.
    • Stop smoking therapy 1 session lasting 90 mins to 2 hours.
